Mijn duimpotje!
Wie kent ze niet? Uit de eigen kleuterjaren of de basisschooljaren van onze kinderen en/of kleinkinderen: het duimpotje! Misschien ken je ze wel maar was je niet op de hoogte van de officiële benaming van deze keramische techniek.
Een duimpot uit 2001 van mijn zoon Thomas (toen 5 jaar):
Een duimpot is een pot die wordt gevormd door je duim in een bolletje klei te duwen en dan al ronddraaiend, knijpend tussen wijsvinger en duim, de wand dunner te maken.
Onderschat de mogelijkheden niet met deze techniek. Al in de oudheid werden zo kookpotten en voorraadpotten gemaakt en ook op de Nederlandse Keramiekopleiding in Gouda wordt deze techniek serieus genomen.
In jaar 1 – ik meen de tweede opdracht voor handvormen - kregen we als opdracht om bollen te maken uit duimpotten: Studiebollen! De bol(len) moesten daarna gevormd worden tot een ‘persoonlijk werkstuk’, waarvoor we vooraf een ontwerp maakte in de vorm van een ‘moodboard’.
Mijn inspiratie was het gemeenteplantsoen voor mijn huis. Dat klinkt niet echt romantisch dus laat ik het anders formuleren. Mijn inspiratie is de inheemse struik Rode kornoelje in het Latijn: Cornus sanguinea. Mooi groen blad met parallelle nerven, blauwe bessen op enigszins rode stengels.

Onmiddellijk realiseer je dan wat een technieken er allemaal bij komen kijken, om je ontwerp tot uitvoering te brengen!
Kijk maar even mee dan laat ik wat fasen zien!
Uit twee bolletjes klei een gelijkmatige en best wel grote duimpot maken, waarvan de wanden niet te dik zijn (lees: te zwaar):
Twee halve duimpotjes aan elkaar monteren zonder dat je ziet waar de naad zit. Hoe krijg je die bol mooi rond en hoe blijft hij rond? Een emmertje met een plastic zak erin, op zijn plaats gehouden door elastiek, help daarbij. De vakterm daarvoor is een ‘hangmatje’. De bol kan hierin liggen zonder de ronde vorm te verliezen. Met een drinkglas ronddraaiende bewegingen maken zo krijg je de huid van de bol glad en de bol ronder!
Daarna de bol versnijden en ornamenten toevoegen. Goede techniek gebruiken zodat de bol de biscuitstook doorstaat zonder dat er scheuren ontstaan en onderdelen afvallen. De biscuitstook is de eerste stook die van de klei steenachtig keramiek maakt.
Dan wil je de bol zelf schoon houden en de takken, bladeren en bessen inkleuren met metaaloxides. Metaaloxides worden aangemaakt met water en zo ontstaan ‘washes’. Het opbrengen kan enorm vlekken. Het oppervlak van de bol kun je dan schoonhouden door het met latex in te kwasten zodat dit een beschermende laag tegen vlekken geeft. Als je dan klaar bent met de kleuren (ongestookt allemaal bruin en zwart overigens!) haal je met een naald de latex eraf. Daarna de hele bol van een glazuurlaag voorzien.
Gladbrand of glazuurstook op 1060°C, de temperatuur waarop in het eerste jaar glazuur wordt gestookt.
Er kan zoveel mis gaan op deze reis! De meeste studenten maken daarom niet één maar meerdere bollen ,om uit te vinden wat het beste ‘werkt’ en wat totaal niet werkt. Veel teleurstellingen maar ook heel veel plezier als aan het einde iedereen het resultaat aan elkaar laat zien. Wat een verschillende werken komen er dan tevoorschijn!
