Sgraffito in keramiek: vaas en kom.
Sgraffito is een decoratietechniek die niet alleen gebruikt wordt om keramiek te decoreren. Het woord komt van het Italiaanse ‘graffiare’ dat krassen betekent. Ook ‘graffiti‘: het schrijven of tekenen op openbare plaatsen komt van hetzelfde woord.
Bij sgraffito wordt in verschillend gekleurde lagen een tekening met lijnen gekrast, waarbij de onderliggende laag, die een andere kleur heeft, aan het aan oppervlak komt te liggen. Vlakken kunnen worden weggekrast, zodat een heel vlak met de onderliggende kleur zichtbaar wordt.
De lijnen zijn strak en dat levert vaak een ‘grafisch’ beeld op. Overal in de wereld en de geschiedenis kom je werk gemaakt met deze techniek tegen. In pleisterwerk (fresco’s), in glas, in keramiek. Van Japan, Midden-Oosten, Afrika tot Italië, Frankrijk, België, Engeland tot Amerika.
17e eeuws slibware, sgraffito - Burton Art Gallery - Devon
In 2016 ben ik naar de Burton Art Gallery in Bideford in Devon, Engeland geweest. Daar stond heel veel Engels 17e eeuws slibware aardewerk met heel veel sgraffito. Prachtig! Dit aardewerk werd als export artikel op schepen naar Amerika vervoerd.

In het museum staan verschillende voorbeelden van de ‘Harvest-Jug’.
Dit zijn grote kannen om bier en cider te schenken tijdens de oogstfeesten. De kannen zijn pronkstukken die gemaakt werden van rood aardewerk en gedecoreerd met verschillende kleuren slib: geel, wit, bruin en roze. In deze verschillend gekleurde lagen werden de mooiste patronen gekrast en gekerfd, met veel dieren, bloemen en planten.
Mijn vaas van rood aardewerk die ik voor het examen van de Nederlandse Keramiekopleiding maakte, is geïnspireerd door zo’n ‘Harvest Jug’ die ik in Engeland heb gezien.
Ik draaide van rode aardewerkklei (Goerg&Schneider 354) een grote bolle vaas met een smalle hals. Na het ‘afdraaien’ van de vaas heb ik de vaas voorzien van een laag witte kleislib.
Afdraaien is het afwerken of bijwerken van gedraaid werk met metalen gereedschap om een gladde pot te krijgen en/of een ring aan de onderzijde als voet te maken.
De vaas met slib moet dan weer even drogen tot hij weer leerhard is en niet meer te zacht is. Dan nog net iets droger en het werk is geschikt om te decoreren met de sgraffito techniek. Leerharde klei is nog net vochtig genoeg om een beetje zacht te zijn. Bij het inkrassen kruimelt de klei nog niet. Voor sgraffito begint de fase van het kruimelen maar net.
Ik heb wat tekeningen gemaakt van verschillende akkeronkruiden: rogge of tarwe, korenbloem, bolderik, gewone klaproos en gele ganzenbloem.
De schetsen zijn met behulp van het kopieerapparaat op het juiste formaat gebracht en daarna is de tekening met een potlood overgetrokken op de zachte klei. De lijnen heb ik uitgesneden met een dunne stylus tool.
Tenslotten haal je de achtergrond weg. Ik koos ervoor om de achtergrond 1-2 mm te verdiepen en glad te maken.
Hierbij heb ik dankbaar gebruik gemaakt van het oude gereedschap dat ik van mijn tandarts had gekregen.
Mijn vaas (en kom) zijn tweekleurig. Dus de bloemen liggen nu wit, verhoogd op de rode achtergrond. Er zitten heel wat uurtjes in het uitsnijden van de decoratie. Met de plantenspuit hou je dan het werk vochtig en de delen waar je niet aan bezig bent dek je af met plastic folie.
Na het drogen is de vaas en kom biscuit gestookt. De biscuitstook is de eerste stook die ik op 1020°C doe en klei in keramiek veranderd. Daarna heb ik een laag transparante glanzende glazuur op de vaas gespoten. De glazuurstook is gedaan op 1060°C.
Je kunt heel veel voorbeelden van sgraffito vinden. Meerkleurig, tweekleurig in allerlei tinten, zwart-wit en wat stijl betreft traditioneel, geometrisch of modern.
Gedecoreerde vaas en kom - droog maar nog ongebakken (klei)
Bij het decoreren van de gekleurde vazen met de akkerbloemen heb ik een combinatie van schilderen met onderglazuren en sgraffito toegepast. Ook deze vaas kreeg een witte sliblaag.
De gebruikte onderglazuren zijn van Mayco. Ik had via Marktplaats ooit eens een partijtje Mayco Fundamentals Underglazes gekocht. Deze vind ik erg goed: ze zijn mat, betrouwbaar en te stoken van 1000°C - 1300°C. Let op want niet alle kleuren kunnen hoog gestookt worden.
Voor 1060°C zijn ze perfect!
Met de stylus trok ik lichtjes de tekeningen over van de akkerbloemen in de gewenste compositie. Met kleuren onderglazuur ‘kleurde’ ik als het ware de tekeningen in. Daarna gebruikte ik hier de sgraffito techniek om de tekeningen te accentureren.
De lijnen zijn wat losser aangebracht en hier en daar zie je de kleuren bewust buiten de lijntjes komen. Biscuitstook en glazuurstook zijn hetzelfde gedaan als de grote vaas en kom met de witte akkerbloemen.
